The first Anglican Bishop of Cape Town, Bishop Gray, founded a school in one of his cottages on his grounds at Bishopscourt in 1849. A year later, the school moved to its present property at Woodlands in Rondebosch, a suburb 8 kilometres from Cape Town. The year the school moved to Woodlands, its first cricket field was laid out by Henry Herbert, an old Etonian. Its oldest rival is SACS, and there is a great rivalry with Rondebosch Boys.
