Takapuna Grammar School, established in 1927, has a longstanding tradition of promoting cricket among its students. In the early years, the school fielded both boys’ and girls’ cricket teams, with female students actively participating in the sport. Notably, alumna Grace Gooder, who attended Takapuna Grammar, made significant contributions to women’s cricket, representing New Zealand in a Test match in 1949.
However, by 2014 and 2015, the presence of girls’ cricket teams at Takapuna Grammar had diminished, with no active teams during those years. Recognizing the importance of providing equitable opportunities, the school revitalized its girls’ cricket program in 2016. This initiative aimed to create a pathway for female students, especially those transitioning from North Shore Cricket Club’s junior programs, to continue developing their skills. The renewed focus yielded impressive results; the 1st XI Girls’ team clinched the Auckland Cricket Schools title and the Gillette Venus Qualifying Tournament in the 2022-2023 season. The 1st XI Girls’ team also competed in the Schools National Tournament in 2020 (5th place), 2023 (3rd place) and 2025 (3rd place).
